Thanks for your efforts to help end bear bile farming. I have been following this issue, and there is the HR3029 House bill and S1125 senate bill here in the u.s. to end illegal bear part trade (not sure the status). Every week I see what's happening online with the moon bears and actively pursue an end to the most horrific example of animal cruelty I have come across in 20 years of animal welfare work. Without funds, I try to be creative. I have set up fund-raising events for AAF and will contunue. Keep going! Thank you.

Just discovered this website and it looks great. I too am extremely upset at this cruel trade and ashamed of the humans involved for not being able to show any compassion for other living creatures. Animals feel pain too and should be allowed to live the life given to them to the full, not for the benefit of those humans who live in the past and are afraid to move into the 21st century. Alternatives are available to treat ailments. Move on - free the bears. Member of AAF.

Whilst I applaud your sentiment can you explain how you intend to "create and manage a sanctuary for the approximately 1,000 bears".
I believe the largest bear sanctuary in the world houses around 200 bears.
I hope you are listening to advice from those with experience of bear sanctuaries such as AAF and WSPA.

Hi, I am a lawyer in the U.S., and one way I am trying to stop this horrible practice is to dry up the demand. There is a bill being considered in the House right now - H.R. 3029: Bear Protection Act of 2007. It will probihit the import or sale of any bear products into or out of the U.S. For any of you in the U.S. - please right to your representative/senators and garner support, please!

Admin reply: Thanks for posting Dianna,

You are right, the bears wont be safe until the demand for bear products stops.

Scientific opinion clearly shows that the synthetic version of the medicinally active ingredient in bear bile is much more effective than that taken from these poor tortured creatures.

There is some good information on this at http://www.bearbilefacts.org

Admin reply: Thanks Olivia,
Your right, it defies understanding as to how anyone can treat any animal like this.

We ARE going to keep doing all that we can to end the torture of Korea's moon bears.

I think it's great that people from around the world are on here helping out for this great cause. I'm curious, are all the people who've posted so far currently living in Korea? I think it's so important that Moons Bears Org gets more attention and help from expats on the ground in Korea.
Helping the bears, it can be done.

Admin reply: Thanks for posting Shawn.

Our campaign would definately benefit from more support in the expat community.

We believe that everyone living in Korea is affected by the stain on the 'spirit' of Korea that results from the horrendous treatment of her bears. The bear is, after all, the mythological mother of all Korea.

It will not be easy, but you are right - it can be done.

Can we try writing letters to the president ?
Polite ones, being rude does not help the cause.
Are you receiving advice from AAF ?
Is bear farming not officialy illegal in Korea ?
Can we not plead with them to enforce the law ?
Are there any foreign companies in Korea one could approach for perhaps offering the farmers some form of compensation or incentive for surrendering their bears ?

Admin reply: Hi Mitz,

Thanks for posting

Koreananimals.org has previously undertaken a letter writing campaign directed to the Ministry of Environment which is the department responsible for bear farming. Since then a new government has been elected. The new President was inaugurated about two weeks ago and as far as I know has yet to successfully appoint an Environment minister.

Because of the President’s farming background I am hopeful that a suitable solution that caters both to the farmers and the bears will be forthcoming early in his term.

AAF are doing a fantastic job for the bears in China and Vietnam but are still only scratching the surface of the problem in those countries so Jill and her team really do already have their hands full. In addition, Korea presents an entirely different dynamic both culturally and politically and there are efficient and well organized groups on the ground in Korea willing to take up the challenge.

Bear farming is not illegal in South Korea, in fact the industry was first promoted by the government in 1981. You can read more about this under the heading ‘CHRONOLGY’ on our home page.

Korea is looking to sign Free Trade agreements with both Australia and the United States this year, so I believe it could be effective to lobby the appropriate trade departments in both of these countries alerting them to the predicament of the moon bears.

Awareness of bear farming is growing throughout the world, including the United States. The increasing international awareness of this cruel and obsolete practice will end bear farming.
